Following the Civil War, in 1884 congress empowered certain individuals, to assist citizens in reclaiming property commandeered for the war effort. These individuals were called Enrolled Agents. When the income tax was passed in 1913, the roll of Enrolled Agents was expanded to include claims for monetary relief for citizens who's taxes had become inequitable.
Today Enrolled Agents are the only tax professionals licensed by the federal government to represent taxpayers and assist them with tax planning and tax return preparation. Like CPAs and attorneys, they are authorized to appear on the taxpayer's behalf in front of the IRS. Enrolled agents use their expertise in the constantly evolving field of tax law to effectively represent their clients as they have done for over 120 years.
