Who We Are
What the heck is an EA? (or did you just mis-spell CPA?)
Enrolled Agents (EAs) are America's Tax Experts! EAs have been around since the Civil War and are the only federally licensed tax practitioners who specialize in taxation with unlimited rights to represent taxpayers
before the IRS. The enrolled agent came about
in 1884 when, Congress passed the Horse Act
to regulate persons assisting citizens filing
claims for reparations against the U.S.
Government for property commandeered
during the war effort. This function was
expanded to include the income tax
when the 16th amendment was ratified
in 1913. In fact, until 1936, both attorneys
and CPAs were required to sit for the
Enrolled Agent exam in order to practice
before the IRS.
Another little-known advantage of using an Enrolled Agent is “client privilege”, which allows confidentiality between the taxpayer and the enrolled agent under situations involving audits and collection matters.
James Mitchell, EA (Senior Partner)
James is an Enrolled Agent and fellow of the National
Tax Practice Institute. He was born and raised in West
Bountiful, Utah where, after serving a mission to the
Philippines, earned degrees at Weber State University and
the University of Utah. He came to St George in 1996 where
he founded The Tax Company. James specializes in IRS
representation and tax problem resolution. His greatest accomplishment thus far is being the father of four great children. His least greatest accomp-lishment is being a lifelong Raiders fan. When not at work, he enjoys traveling and doing triathlons and someday hopes to rule the tri-state area.
Scott Finch, CPA (Managing Partner)
Scott was born in Arizona and moved to St George with
his family in 1997. He has been doing taxes since he was
18, having only taken only a brief hiatus to earn an accounting
degree at Brigham Young University in 2008. Scott also holds
a master’s degree in Accounting from Western Governor’s University
and has the unique designation of being both an Enrolled Agent and a CPA. He specializes in trusts as well as individual and business taxation. Scott is an avid sports fan who especially enjoys playing basketball. He loves time with his wife Josie and their three and a half wonderful children.
Nick Wilson, EA (Partner)
Nick is an Enrolled Agent from Santa Clara, Utah and
holdsa B.A. in Accounting from Dixie State University and
a Master of Accountancy from Western Governors University.
He recently became a father for the third time. Blessed with
three boys, he and his wife are pleased to be able raise their family here in Southern Utah. Nick is an outdoor enthusiast, who loves spending time with family and friends enjoying southern Utah’s majestic landscape. Having been voted “best dressed in the office” for two years in a row, Nick is also highly qualified tax preparer with extensive knowledge of accounting and taxation.
Travis follows in the footsteps of his older brothers and is
actually the third Woodbury to have been a partner in our
firm. Having been born and raised in Washington, Utah,
Travis attended Dixie State University and then decided to
leave home and moved far away to Hurricane, Utah. He has
been with The Tax Company since 2012 and is the proud parent of zero. Travis enjoys the outdoors, sports and spending time on white sandy beaches.
Travis Woodbury, EA (Partner)
Ariel has lived in Utah most of her life, with the exception
of a brief stint in Texas. As our gate keeper of 3 years,
Ariel does all of our scheduling and is the lovely voice
that will greet you when you first enter our office. In fact it
has been said that her personality is so magnetic, she is unable
to carry credit cards. Ariel has no kids (that she knows of) but as the second oldest of 12 children so she can handle whining and complaints like walk in the park. Ariel fancies herself a bit of a jogger, historian, and has reached beginners level in quilting and painting but is a terrible cook.
Mike studies accounting at Southern Utah University
where he runs both cross-country and track. He is also
the founder of SUU’s ping-pong club making him one of
the most eligible bachelors in Southern Utah. Nepotism runs
deep here at The Tax Company and Mike is no exception as he
is the brother of Scott Finch, however we prefer to think of us all as
one big happy family.
Despite being a BYU fan, Jeremy is an excellent
accountant! Originally from Orem, Utah, Jeremy has a
master’s degree in Accounting from Southern Utah
University and will sit this year for the Enrolled Agent exam.
When not busy doing taxes, he helps run the family business,
Rocky Mountain Radiator. After nearly a dozen years of searching through the desert sands, Jeremy convinced a beautiful girl named Danielle to be his wife. They have no children yet, although they probably get asked when that will happen on a daily basis.
Danielle hails from Monroe, Utah, where her father
operates a successful accounting practice. Although
she grew up around accounting, she also has experience
in a broad range of industries. She excels at bookkeeping
and will be filing a joint return for the first time this year with her new husband Jeremy.
Chase looks older than he is, but that’s because he is
a father of three children. He is also smarter than he
looks, which makes him REALLY smart. His skills include
preparing information returns, overseeing IRS compliance and assists in compiling and organizing client records. He’s sort of a private person, so that’s about it… although word has it that he has an amazing wife who supports the long hours and late nights he puts in during tax season.
Stevie originally came from Leawood, Kansas. But she
knows she “is not in Kansas anymore”. She came to us in her
usual nomadic way and has embraced culture and beauty of this
community. For over 16 years she has called Saint George home. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Accountancy from Dixie State University which complements a diverse business background including real estate, loans, and business administration for technical organizations. She and is our Enrolled Agent (EA) in the making. She plans to complete the EA Exam prior to the 2019 income tax year. A life-long KC Chiefs fan makes for some rigorous game day banter with Raider fans our team.
